I saw the Speed Museum's retrospective of Mary Anne Currier, a local Louisvillian who spent her whole life painting exquisite still lives in simple settings. I was so taken by the beauty of her work that I was inspired to do something in her style. I happened to be in the midst of a new painting class and decided to make this my focus. I chose onions because, God bless, onions will last a long time, and I knew this painting was going to take me a while. It's far more somber than her work typically is, and perhaps more minimalistic. It happened that the former Director of the Speed Museum, who helped develop the Currier show, saw this piece when I was sharing remodeling photos of my home. He asked “is that a Mary Anne Currier?“ I knew then that I had managed to capture the essence of her point of view.
